It is a sad day for film-lovers, one of the greatest actors of his generation, and beyond, is retiring. Daniel Day-Lewis decided to quit acting at the age of 60. After a prominent career spanning four decades, the Oscar-winning actor Sir Daniel Lewis will no longer be appearing in roles.
Unfortunately, the reason behind this sudden decision is yet unknown, the star’s agent issued a statement where it is said that he “will no longer be working as an actor”. It was also noted the decision is private, and the movie star is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences. Reportedly, there will be no further comments on the subject neither from Lewis nor from his representatives.
Famous for his inimitable roles and unique approach to method acting, Day-Lewis has reshaped and reformed the process of getting prepared for a role and performing on screen. Known for remaining in character even off-screen, the 60-year-old former actor often went to great lengths to make his portrayal as best as it can possibly be. Learning Czech, listening to Eminem records for inspiration, confining himself to a wheelchair, going to complete isolation and completely changing characters for a role are some of the ways this magnificent performer used to bring out the best version of what we saw on screen.
“There Will Be Blood”, “My Left Foot”, “Gangs of New York”, and “In the Name of the Father” are just of the most popular titles that earned him the title of one of the best in the business. In fact, Day-Lewis is the only performer to ever win three best actor Oscars! Even though he’s always been a very popular and demanded actor, the English actor was also known for being extremely selective and reclusive. It would often take years in between his projects which he would very carefully choose. Some of the fans are hoping this is just another one of the longer pauses before he gets back to filming, but according to the agent and representatives, this is the end of Daniel Day-Lewis’ career.
One final film is awaiting its release, the untitled drama set in the world of high fashion is scheduled to hit theaters on December 25, 2017. The movie sees Daniel Day-Lewis reuniting with Paul Thomas Anderson (director of There Will Be Blood), and a close source of the retired actor said Sir Daniel plans to promote the movie. Hopefully, more details and some clarification will soon be announced by the former movie star.
Let’s remember some of the most iconic performances by this one-of-a-kind actor!
